Oban

In days gone by when travel was mainly by rail and steamer Oban was called the Charing Cross of the north. It was where all routes seemed to meet. The same still holds true today, if you’re going out to or coming from the islands chances are your ferry will berth here. It’s a great place to sit and watch the world go by.

On the hill above the town stands McCaig’s Tower, an unfinished project which has gone on to become the town’s major landmark and a beautiful spot to look out over the sea to the islands. Or you can pick your spot in the bay and watch the boats and people come and go. There’s the Lighthouse Pier, where the ships servicing the lighthouses and navigation buoys dock; the South Pier with the fishing boats; the Railway Pier with the Caledonian MacBrayne ferries and the North Pier with boats from the Royal Navy, visiting foreign navies, tall ships, Customs cutters and dive boats.

Should you feel the need for some retail therapy Oban has a variety of shops with something for everyone. The town centre has various art galleries from where you may be lucky enough to witness the breathtaking vividness of your first original John Lowrie Morrison oil. The local Artist’s materials shop has a glorious selection for the budding amateur painter and professional alike. Here you can also find an eclectic collection of local scenes transposed onto various greetings cards. Oban is also lucky enough to have its own “Chocolate Factory” and Café not to mention the exquisite delicatessen complete with its in-store café.

Oban is now blessed with a variety of quality restaurants should you wish a night out in the town. You can find intimate gourmet fish restaurants (do not forget to book in advance), Gastropubs celebrating the best of Scottish ingredients, Italian and Indian Restaurants. We are not too shy to promote The Glen Campa Restaurant where you could sample The Queens Hotel Speciality Seafood Platter, which is simply second to none.
